Here is today's activity. If you haven't already watched last week's lecture on the Roaring Twenties, please do so. After the Great War, famously known as World War I, came to a close with the Treaty of Versailles, America started to have an economical and cultural boom called the Roaring Twenties. The amount of citizens unemployed, the standard of living has improved, and the government has returned to its laissez-faire policy. Some might've even called America the new China. Industrialists like Henry Ford created a way for cars to be more affordable to the people, slashing the use of trains by almost half and growing the production of infrastructure by a substantial amount. The idea of consumerism is starting to grow, causing people buy more electric appliances using credits. The roles of women start to become more important in the common workplace as well. After their fight for woman suffrage, women are starting to fill in as secretaries and phone-operators. The creation of the radio popularizes the African-american culture with the introduction of jazz and the Harlem Renaissance. The idea of superiority causes xenophobia and a red scare of immigrants coming from a country with communistic views. The rise of the "new" Ku Klux Klan starts to be seen more around America as well and gets a fair amount of political and cultural power with their Anglo-Saxon superiority and negaive views on immigrants.

During the 1920s, aspects of what is considered "modern America" had begun to emerge. Due to World War I prior to this decade, America was mainly focused on coming out of the war and still allow for the country to continue to function. Now that the War was over, America had began to change in all aspects to ways that are familiar nowadays. For example, by the introduction of mass production, automobiles were allowed to be produced more, resulting in its affordability, causing for less passenger trains to be used and more people to start buying and using cars as their primary mode of transportation. This is relatable now since almost everyone in America has or currently uses automobiles. Looking from a social standpoint, women started to emerge in new fashions and were starting to go against the norms set by society. Nowadays, feminism is the new norm of society. Another aspect of the 1920s that can still be considered as modern America ideas was the introduction of the radio. From radios, Americans were able to hear of news that was going on from both coasts as it occurred instead of only reading about it after it occurred. From radios, different outlets of media continued to emerge leading to the mass media outlets we have today that started from the radio such as NBC, CBS, NPR as well as forms of entertainment.

The Roaring 20’s were considered to be a time where modern life began to first emerge. Ideas and inventions were brought into this era and set a foundation of what modernist elements transcend to how daily life is today. After the First World War has ended, society began to rapidly shift to urban life, which accommodated to the multitude of jobs that took place in industrial settings now that farmers gradually lost their jobs. The Roaring 20s is also an era notorious for the invention of radios catering to the ability to communicate among masses of people. Not only radios were used for music, but they became a norm for access to news when televisions weren’t in the picture yet. Furthermore, automobiles were also an essential mode of transportation as it became an indicator to the construction of infrastructure. Roads and highways were needed to ensure that people could properly travel. The Model T Ford is a prime example of one of the automobiles often used. Likewise, mass culture has definitely taken its toll on the development of society during the ‘20s and has really contributed to an era of consumerism as well. Individuals who acquired employment in industrial settings were able to purchase goods and use services to their leisure and these events did apply to the growth of American culture. Another important thing to mention, was the prevailing idea of feminism. The consistent urge for women’s rights to equality has persevered throughout the Progressive era into the Roaring 20’s, especially with involvement in politics such as voting. Women were now able to vote freely with the ratification of the nineteenth amendment. Consequently, the Roaring 20’s serves as an adequate example of the “modern decade” of America in terms of the massive spread of consumerism, new culture, and more opportunities for women in the political realm.

The roaring 20's is the first considered the first modern decade in american history because in this period many new inventions were introduced. For example, cheaper cars due to the assembly line and better technology like telephones. Also life for most Americans changed drastically. For example the unemployment rate is low, meaning income is going up.

The Roaring 20's consisted of many innovations and many progressive ideas that many would consider as modern. The standard of living was very high during this time period. This included ways to better improve the life of human beings, whether that being bringing electricity and central heating or technological advances, such as the first liquid-fueled rocket. Transportation also transformed greatly in this period. Many people took the means of transportation into their own hands by buying cars and did not need to depend on trains. Because of this, Henry Ford installed an assembly line that would create many cars and reduce the amount of time it would take to make a car. The population started to increase as well. This brought people from around the world with different views on religion and lifestyles. Images of people started to rise as America became to be seen as the "land of success". This leads to the Harlem Renaissance, where many African-Americans gained popularity in their views of music, literature, and art. Given these reasons, it is safe to say that the Roaring 20's was the first modern decade in American society.

The Roaring Twenties were a pivotal point in America's change both politically and socially. For the first time, cities in America were more populous than farms. The nation’s wealth between 1920 and 1929 nearly tripled, causing the standard of living to heighten dramatically (i.e. lower unemployment rate). This growth economically shifted Americans into a consumerism society, with the invention of many machines for mass production (i.e. assembly line for the production of cars). Nationwide advertising with the radio and the spread of chain stores caused goods to be more accessible. In this "mass culture," Americans gained a commonality in the music they listened to, the dances they did, and even the slang they used. This was all very unfamiliar before this time. This sparked a lot of conflict and controversy in America, but many people-- usually in the nation's big cities-- used this as an era of self-expression (i.e. fashion, art, literature, Harlem Renaissance) and protest (i.e. feminism). New standards and ways of living unlike the society America was in before the 1920s proves the shift to a more modern country.

The 1920’s brought about many advances in technology, the economy, and social issues. America witnessed numerous changes to the economy because of the large scale manufacturing of automobiles and the mechanization of many jobs. The employment rates in the urban areas of America were high and the income was good. The use of many appliances also began to increase which in turn increased the standard of living for many Americans. Things such as plumbing, electricity, and central heating became popular in areas that were no longer rural and had been urbanized. Along with economic growth came the spread of mass media. The radio was used in many households to listen to music, shows, or dramas that were broadcasted. The radio allowed for Jazz music to gain a tremendous amount of popularity among the modern American population. People began going out to see movies and enjoying mass media entertainment much more often than they had before. The role of women also began to change as they began to push against the societal norms that were put in place over time. Their fashion style began to change and there was a decrease in the domesticity aspect of womens’ lives. Women began to enter the workforce a lot more and took up ‘pink collar’ jobs like being a secretary or a phone operator. All of these changes that took place during the 1920’s serve as primary examples of how this decade was one of the first with the most new and progressive ideas that would change the way America operates and how other countries would view America as well.

The Roaring 20's were a point in history that took place after World War 1 was ended. During this time, America was at an economic high. Many advancements made it easier for consumers and lives of the people to function. Take mass production for example. The start of mass production made it easier and faster for cars to be made-which, in turn, made cars less expensive and easier to buy. Because of this, the rate that people used trains decreased greatly. The radio also shined light to bring up Jazz, the Harlem Renaissance and other media outlets. This time period was also a good time for women and the unemployed as well. People who once didn't have a job were able to get one and could participate in purchasing and using services. Women were now seen as helpful in common workplaces as there was an uprise in female phone operators and secretaries.
