1. Difference in economy: The north had established industry and was more reliant on manufacturing and immigrants while the south focused more on large-scale farming, slavery, and growing crops such as cotton.

1. Although slavery was benefitting the southern economy heavily, the north was taking in a majority of the profits as the emergence of the textile industry of the north was supported by the cotton production in the south. This results in a lack of necessity for slaves in the north but a need for them in the south.

1. Compromising for free states and slave states divided the country more as they fought/bought territories. Such compromising was the Compromise of 1850 and popular sovereignty.

The top 5 reasons sectionalism led to the Civil War includes the economy differences, social hierarchy, expansion, morals, and political tendencies. The northern states economy was very industry based while the southern states relied heavily on farming. The north got their resources from the south and manufactured it and than sold the products. This caused the south to get the lower end of the deal because they got less for the raw materials than the north did with the manufactured goods which eventually caused debt to the south. This caused some tension. The social hierarchy in the south differed significantly to the north. In the south you had the very rich and wealthy who had 100s of slaves, then you had the medium sized plantation farmers who had 10- 50 slaves, then the small farmers with 1 or 2 slaves, then "poor white trash" and then slaves. While in the north it was nothing like that and because the south was very divided in the social hierarchy, to caused the "poor white trash" and others who didn't own slaves take the side of the north in the civil war. Once America began to expanded westward, it caused problems between the north and the south. The South felt like if there were new states added they would all be antislavery and they would lose power. For example the Missouri Compromise and the Kansas-Nebraska act say the fight of power between the north and the south. Morals also significantly separated the north and south. The south believed in slavery while the north did not, this was a very big reason for conflict between the two that caused specific events that led up to the Civil War. Political tendencies also began to cause tension between the north and the south. During the Election of 1860, there were 4 candidates, nominated by the Democrats, Republicans, Southern Democrats, and the Union party. Abraham Lincoln was the Republican nominee and believed that slavery was moral wrong but wasn't considered an abolitionist because it was technically in the constitution. The south didn't like the idea of Lincoln being president and if he did they threatened to leave the Union and when he did South Carolina seceded and the rest of the southern states followed. Which led to the beginning of the Civil War.

Sectionalism caused a major riff in the country, where it was practically as if two minds were trying to share the same body. However, with them violently opposing each other on the fundamentals, there were conflicts.

1. The South's agriculture and economy was built on the idea of slavery, although the North's economy was based on industry and innovation. If slavery was abolished, the South's economy would decrease.

1. The industrialization of the north brought a lot of profit. People were immigrating to America and coming to work in the factories for cheap. The north had an elaborate economic plan and even had future intents on expansion. There were railroads for goods and information to be transferred in a decent amount of time. However, in the south land owners were in debt and the economy only relied on one crop. As more and more countries began to produce cotton, the export of the crop had become less valuable. While the south was not doing well with the one-crop economy, the north was in a period of financial stability.

1. There were physical and economic differences between the North and the South. The North had more cities and factories while the South relied more on agriculture. Because of this, the United States felt a divide which contributed to the Civil War.

Sectionalism is what ultimately led to the biggest conflicts leading up to the civil war. The division of the North and the South created a hostile environment that was inevitably heading towards significant conflict.

1. The South and the North were too different from each other with the South being more agricultural with slaves and the North being more industrial without slaves. Because of this, they could not agree or compromise as much especially when the topic of claiming the new territories/states came to place.

1) Sectionalism divided the country into two sides, the favored having an industrial economy because their climate could only sustain small scale farming and they needed more materials to be produced at a faster rate. The South preferred an agricultural economy because of the ample amount of fertile land they had available and the climate was suitable for growing crops.

Sectionalism led to to the civil war because the economy was well divided between the North and South. The North depended a lot on factory work and industry while the South was primarily agricultural. Due to this the North had many immigrants who were paid to work while the South had to slaves for free labor.

Sectionalism led to the Civil War because it formulated many disputes between the Northern and Southern states, each taking on a stance that would help them to prosper. Many of these arguments made the South feel the need to succeed from an inferior union. This can be seen in the reaction to the concept of abolition, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Election of 1860, South Carolina's secession, and the Crittenden Compromise. The concept of abolition was first seen in Pennsylvania and spread throughout the Northern states. This highly contrasted with the Southerner's reaction to abolition, as the South feared the idea of freedom reaching their slaves after Nat Turner's rebellion. Many Northerners favored the gradual emancipation and eventual abolition of slavery, the South disregarded this option as they wished to prioritize their method of pride, profit, and competition. These opposing ideas also helped to lead to the second way sectionalism led to the Civil War. The Kansas-Nebraska Act would destroy previously established compromises while keeping a balance between free and slave states. The Southerners would rejoice at the addition of a new slave state, but the free-soilers in the North would refuse this plan and thus spurred more tension between the opposing sides. The election of 1860 also highlights the division that the South felt, as they threatened to succeed the union if Abraham Lincoln were to win the election. The existing politics in the South and North forced each side's support to follow candidates that would serve the betterment of their states and furthered the idea of there being an inferior system in the union. The election of 1860 would result in the secession of South Carolina, solidifying disunion between the North and South states and allowing the South to maintain their economic, social, and political system they desired. The Critteneden Compromise was an attempt to unionize the states once more by adhering to some of the southerner's wishes, only to be neglected by Lincoln. The inflexibility shown by Lincoln highlights the rejection the North held for the South's ideals and provides evidence as to why sectionalism caused disputes that could not be negotiated without war.

1. Economic aspects- The north and the south were based on differing industries and slavery was the very core of the south's economy so thus sectionalism started by antislavery sentiment by northerners. The differences were too great not for there to be tension

1. The economy in the North was more reliant on industry, exports, and work of immigrants utilizing goods the South produced. The South was dangerously reliant on its agriculture (especially after the invention of the cotton gin which meant the need for more land and, therefore, more slave labor). Taking away slavery would be significantly more detrimental to the South’s economy, but not so much so for the North’s economy.

1. The North, especially Abraham Lincoln, wanted to end slavery. But the South did not want to because their economy heavily needed slaves to pick their cotton. 2. The South Democrats and the North Democrats splitted because of the Election of 1860, making the new party the Republicans. 3. The Kansas-Nebraska Act caused slavery to be in territories even above the 36 30 line. 4. The South did not liked that Abraham Lincoln won the presidency because he was against slavery. 5. The North believe it was better to industrialize while the South think it’s better to stay agricultural.
